i recently got me self a holga plastic camera. it takes 120 roll of film. i have been experimenting with plastic cameras for a while. i absolutely love plastic "toy" cameras. Be it disposable or reusable cameras... i am looking for a place to develop the 120 rolls.. i will try to develop the black and white film at kwantlen uni. where i work sometimes. i am very excited about this.. :)

what i really like about these cameras are its randomness and unpredictability. in an instantaneous world it feels good to be able to step back. the waiting for the film to get developed is another aspect that i value. waiting makes my imagination go wild. wonder on what the outcome would be.. there is a certain pleasure in wondering the uncertainty... so many possibilities. finally an idea becoming something tangible feel like i am able to reach and manipulate my perceptions. look at what i witnessed in other possible angels.

passing lights

recently did an installation at gallery 716... this is also a proposed installation that i recently got a grant for which i am working on...

This is an excerpt from the installation "Passing Lights".

At certain time of the day, I see the reflection of sunlight from the passing cars cast on to the wall of my studio building. I shot these passing lights and projected it back on to the wall. These lights "invade" my space momentarily. Sometimes I will see the pedestrian's shadows cast on the walls as they walk-by, breaking the rhythmic flow. This is still a work in progress. I would like to shoot with a different camera with a higher contrast. My studio is in the Vancouver Downtown East side. The power relation between the street inhabitants (mainly the homeless, addicts, prostitutes etc) and the people passing (usually confined to their vehicle) between Downtown and the suburbs interests me: How the jaywalkers throw the rhythmic flow of the traffic in to disarray for a brief moment inverting the power relation.

Our performance piece Experiments and Observations on different Types of Air got accepted in to the VIVO signal & noise festival. We are very excited. This is a piece that Sara Gold and I performed at Rizome recently. Sarah will be doing a work shop on Sunday April 25th as well.

the opening for the show in which the benches we made was last friday at 716 gallery on hastings. the benches came out pretty nice. i am happy with the designs and we learnt a lot about screen printing..specially such large sized images.

Greg works upstairs from my studio. He makes awesome furniture. I am trying to create designs for the wooden benches and screen print on them. This will also be my first time making such large prints let alone print on wood.

I am also working on a contract redoing the website of a design firm Ryan. located in the malidves.

Shooting for Pets and Friends is done and we have already screened the first cut of both the promotional video and the actual doc. They seem to be OK with it with some minor changes. Chris will be doing the music for this as well. This is my first time working with Chris.
I am also finishing the packaging for a Canadian production titled "Out in the Cold". It seems to have taken me longer than I thought to come up with a concept for this. The poster, postcards, Invites, and the websites will have a similar theme if this concept gets approved.

I was privileged to see a draft of the film and it was really good. I cant wait to see it in the festival circuits.

end of embracing canada

Finally the Embracing Canada series is complete and the last episode went online a few weeks back. It has been a great experience and would love to do one more project like this. We will see if this series get to other venues.

Alex has finished writing the draft for the Pets and Friends documentary. We will be submitting the draft and see what these guys say. Hopefully there wont be much change. I am itching to get this project going and shoot as soon as possible. I think it will be a fun project to direct and edit..

CBC radio Embracing canada

We have so far finished 17 episodes and shooting the next three episodes in the coming weeks. It has been a great experience for me not just the technical aspect of it. Recently finished the animations for a training video for Molson Canada. The animations look alright. The animations were done in 5 days with a very limited budget. These animations were done for Fannu Studios whom I work on a regular contract basis. They are based in Vancouver.
